About This Place
A little more about ONE WITH LIFE Forum
ONE WITH LIFE Forum is a quiet, protected place for people who wish to explore the deeper questions of life, consciousness and human existence.
Here, you may learn from the experience of others, explore questions and reflections, or simply read and consider what you find. You are also welcome to become a member, ask questions and share thoughts of your own.
What this place is not
ONE WITH LIFE Forum is not another social media platform.
It is not a religious organisation, a spiritual school or a movement seeking followers. It does not promote a particular doctrine or philosophy, nor does it exist to persuade anyone to adopt a particular set of beliefs.
It is not a place for endless debate, personal promotion or the expression of opinions simply for their own sake.
And it is not a commercial enterprise offering courses, paid memberships or promises of enlightenment.
There is nothing here that you are expected to believe, no particular path you are asked to follow, and no organisation to which you must surrender your independence.
So what is this place?
At its heart, ONE WITH LIFE Forum is a place of learning, inquiry and shared understanding.
It began with a simple intention.
The book ONE WITH LIFE was written by Jack Baker to help those who might find something within its pages that caused them to reflect upon and question their own lives. Rather than leave those readers alone with whatever questions arose, the Forum was created to offer somewhere they could bring them.
A place where people from different backgrounds, cultures and traditions might explore the deeper questions of human existence. Where sincere questions are welcomed, different perspectives can be considered, and knowledge born of experience can be shared.
Knowledge born of experience
There is a difference between acquiring knowledge and coming to understand something through experience.
Knowledge is the beginning of understanding. Without knowledge, there can be no informed application, and without application, knowledge may remain little more than information.
We may acquire knowledge through reading, study, observation or from those who have travelled a path before us. But receiving knowledge is not the same as understanding it.
To understand something for ourselves, we must attempt to apply what we have learned. Through that application, we gain experience. And through experience, genuine understanding may gradually develop.
Yet application requires something essential: discipline.
The human mind is not naturally inclined towards sustained attention. It wanders, becomes distracted and returns repeatedly to familiar patterns of thought and behaviour. To observe ourselves, to remain attentive and to apply what we have learned requires a willingness to return to the effort again and again.
This is not a discipline imposed by another person or organisation, but one undertaken freely through an individual's own wish to understand.
And it is not necessary to withdraw from the world to undertake this work. The ordinary circumstances of daily life, our relationships, responsibilities, difficulties and encounters with others, provide countless opportunities to apply what we have learned.
There is a profound relationship between discipline and freedom. Without some measure of inner discipline, we may remain governed by habits and impulses of which we are scarcely aware.
In this sense, discipline is not the opposite of freedom. It is part of what makes freedom possible.
The Custodian, Jack Baker, and the people being invited to contribute to ONE WITH LIFE Forum have spent much of their lives engaged in this process. Many have devoted forty or fifty years to practical inner work, serious study and inquiry, often within established schools and traditions concerned with consciousness, self-knowledge and the possibilities of human development.
They have learned from others, studied extensively and sought to apply that knowledge within the circumstances of their own lives.
What they offer is therefore not simply information acquired through study, but knowledge informed by understanding developed through practical experience.
They come from different backgrounds and may express their understanding in different ways.
They do not claim to possess all the answers, nor do they ask that their experiences be accepted as truth simply because they have lived them.
Their intention is to share something of what they have discovered, learned and come to understand over the course of their lives.
Such knowledge is offered not as instruction to be obeyed, but as something to be considered, questioned and, where possible, explored through one's own experience.
There is no requirement to join a school, adopt a philosophy or accept another person's conclusions.
A worldwide community, connected by a common interest
The search for understanding can sometimes be a solitary experience.
People who find themselves questioning the nature of life, consciousness, mortality or their own existence may discover that these interests are not easily shared in everyday conversation.
Yet throughout the world, there are others asking similar questions.
ONE WITH LIFE Forum offers a way of becoming part of a worldwide community of people who share this sincere interest, regardless of where they live, what they believe or the circumstances of their lives.
Members may never meet one another. They may never even speak directly. For now, the connection exists through the questions, reflections and knowledge made available within the Forum.
Some may choose simply to read and reflect. Others may ask questions or offer thoughts of their own.
There is no expectation of participation beyond what each person freely chooses.
It is a community connected through shared inquiry rather than shared beliefs.
A sense of belonging without obligation, and companionship without intrusion.
Privacy, independence and respect
A genuine place of inquiry must also be a place where people feel respected.
Every individual brings a different history, different experiences and a different understanding of life.
Agreement is neither necessary nor expected.
What matters is the sincerity with which questions are approached and the respect shown to those whose perspectives may differ from our own.
Privacy is an essential part of this intention. Personal questions and contributions are treated with care, and questions and responses are not made available to the wider membership without the questioner's permission.
No one is required to disclose personal circumstances or share more than they wish.
The Forum seeks to provide a quiet, protected environment in which people may explore freely, without pressure or judgement.
What might be found here?
The questions that concern human existence are as old as humanity itself.
What does it mean to be conscious? What is the relationship between mind and body? Why do we so often live without awareness of ourselves? What might it mean to become more fully present to life?
There are questions concerning stillness, attention, prayer, suffering, compassion, responsibility, mortality and the possibility of inner development.
Different contributors may approach these subjects from different directions, drawing upon their own experience and understanding.
The purpose is not to establish a single explanation of life, but to open possibilities for reflection and discovery.
Sometimes a simple observation, an unfamiliar perspective or a sincerely asked question can illuminate something that has remained unclear for years.
The value of a question
You do not need to be knowledgeable, experienced or accomplished to participate.
There is value not only in receiving a response to a question, but in the very act of asking it.
When we attempt to formulate a sincere question, we must first give attention to what is troubling us, what we are experiencing or what we genuinely wish to understand.
Finding the words requires us to look more closely. It can deepen our concentration, clarify our thinking and sometimes reveal that the question beneath the question is not quite what we first imagined.
In this way, the effort of asking can itself become part of the process of learning.
Something similar occurs when we attempt to explain what we understand to another person. The effort of expressing it clearly can expose gaps in our own understanding and lead us to examine the subject more deeply.
A question that arises sincerely from your own life may therefore be of value not only to you, but to others who have wondered about the same thing.
Equally, a thought or reflection offered from personal experience may help someone else recognise something within themselves.
In this way, the Forum may gradually become a growing library of questions, responses, reflections and practical understanding, available to anyone seeking insight into similar questions.
Those who contribute do so in the hope that something of their experience may be useful to another human being.
A place with an open future
ONE WITH LIFE Forum is still in its infancy.
Its present form is deliberately simple. It offers opportunities to read, reflect, ask questions and share thoughts, within a carefully maintained environment.
What it may become in the future is not predetermined.
As the community develops, other possibilities may arise, guided by the genuine needs and interests of the members.
For now, the intention is simply to establish something worthwhile, preserve its integrity and allow it to grow naturally.
An open invitation
Perhaps you have been exploring these questions for many years. Perhaps something has only recently stirred your curiosity. Or perhaps you are not quite sure what you are looking for.
It does not matter.
You are welcome to explore what is offered here, to consider it in the light of your own experience, and to take from it whatever may be meaningful to you.
Should you wish to become part of this community, you are warmly invited to join the Forum. Membership offers an opportunity to ask questions, share reflections and participate in its continuing development, always in a spirit of mutual respect and individual freedom.
There is nothing you are required to believe, and nothing you are obliged to become.
Beneath all our differences of background, culture, belief and understanding, there is one simple truth we share.
We are alive.
And perhaps learning to recognise what that means is where our inquiry begins.
Welcome to ONE WITH LIFE Forum.
